Statue of Idrimi, king of Alalakh
Description: Statue of Idrimi, king of Alalakh
This statue depicts Idrimi, an intriguing historical figure who ruled the city-state of Alalakh in the 15th century BC. The statue was discovered in a temple by Sir Leonard Woolley, where it had been buried following the city’s destruction by the Sea Peoples in the 12th century BC. The front of the statue is inscribed with a vivid autobiographical account of Idrimi’s life and achievements, including the political misfortunes that caused him to flee Syria, and the circumstances that led to his spectacular return.
