Hadrian's Villa Tiber
Unknown
299BC
Ancient Roman marble statue of Tiber. From the Canopus at Hadrian’s Villa, near Tivoli.
The reclining personification of the river Tiber holds a cornucopia, an oar, and rests his elbow on the She-wolf, symbol of Rome, who suckles the infants Romulus and Remus.
This sculpture was paired with a pendant personification of the river Nile, and a crocodile fountain which sprayed water from its open mouth. All three were situated around the so-called Canopus at Hadrian’s Villa, a long pool surrounded by colonnades and plantings.
